On-the-site quick drawings to explain to volunteers the desired detailing for the Green River house.

Work begins again in Green River

After a winter hiatus, work begins again in Green River. Today, the windows were ordered. Within a day or two, the siding will be ordered.

Later this week, an alternative spring break volunteer group from Colorado College arrives to work on the house. And the week after that, the Lutheran group returns again this year to pitch in. By the end of March, the Green River house will be looking a lot more complete.

Putting a roof on requires extra help.

Luckily, Wayde, Martin, and Mike have been available to assist in installing the up-to-16-feet-long panels and flashing. Not typically used on Habitat homes, metal roofs are more durable than shingles. And in this climate, a reflective metal roof will do a whole lot to lower cooling bills during the hot summers, as compared to black asphalt singles. In addition, the high winds and intense sun work to destroy shingles and compromise the protection against water.

This 29 gauge metal roof is warrantied by the manufacturer for 35 years (typical shingle roofs need replacement after 15 years). The initial price of metal is about double shingles, but the lifetime cost works out to the advantage of the future homeowner. The 9:12 slope will also help to get water off quickly, further protecting the roof.

Green River House Update
The front porch has been framed! Today is the framing inspection for the whole house. With that passing, next is the roof. We must get the roof on before inclement winter weather hits!
A metal roof has been ordered and is due to arrive in a week. We prefer metal roofs due to their durability (it’s warrantied for 35 years!). Plus, the metal will hold up better than shingles, which burn up and blow away out here.
Thanks goes out to the prospective homeowner family, the Mendozas, for showing up over the past week to get things done on site. We’re proceeding forward with the funding provided by Rocky Mountain Power.

Workday at the Wellington 2 House with Wells Fargo

This week we had 10 volunteers from Wells Fargo (of Castle Dale, Price, Moab, & Vernal) working with 9 HFHCC Board Members and 4 other volunteers to install cabinets, paint inside, and install siding. Board Member Billene fixed sloppy joes, macaroni. salad & homemade cake for lunch enjoyed by all.

Thank you to Wells Fargo for their volunteer and financial support!

In preparation for the arrival of Bike & Build, the Green River house is getting foundations poured for the front porch with the help of the staff of the Epicenter.
